Seven day (63 hour) Basic Land Cadaver Search Course
Hosted by: American Patriot K-9 Training LLC
Contact: Matthew T. Zarrella mzarrella@ampkt.com, 401-226-1631
Location: Rhode Island Fire Academy 4 Green Lane, Exeter RI 02822
Dates: December 15-21, 2024
Instructors: Matthew T. Zarrella
The purpose of this course is to train you and your canine partner in the theories and practical aspects of the search for human remains. Initial concentration will be on the mechanics of refining scent recognition, scent commitment and a trained indication. There are a number of practical field exercises which will allow you to apply the classroom instruction to actual field operations.
This class is very intense and is designed for the cadaver search canine team who has already achieved a certification or had some training in other scent disciplines, ie: air scent, trailing, disaster work, etc. This class is designed to introduce and develop the dogs’ abilities to locate the odor of human remains, parts or fluids that may be either above surface or buried underground. The class will consist of approximately 8 hours of classroom and 55 hours of fieldwork.
Cadaver search dogs also known as human remains detection dogs or (HRD dogs) have become a recognized resource for law enforcement agencies nationwide. The capabilities of the well trained team can effectively conduct a search using a minimum of support resources, thus saving time, money and manpower. In many cases, dogs are more effective than technical or mechanical equipment such as ground penetrating radar, infrared sensors or heavy excavation machines.
You will also gain a new appreciation for the talents and capabilities of your canine partner. Since the major emphasis is on teaching the handler to properly read the dog, the training will enhance your performance in all aspects of search and rescue work. This class will essentially give you and your canine partner a tremendous “jump start” in your training toward becoming a certified cadaver dog search team.
Class includes discussion on the following topics:
- Class goals and objectives
- Equipment
- Safety
- Scent theory
- Canine alert behavior – types
- Record keeping for search reports and training logs
- Handling Training Aids
- Conducting a Legal Search
- Working Crime Scene
- Testifying in Court
- Search Strategy
- Field Training
- Use of the Soil Probe
- Reading the Dog
The above curriculum is subject to change based on the needs of the class. Students should be prepared to work in various weather conditions. Evaluations will be offered on the last day of the class and the instructor(s) reserve the right to recommend which canine teams are ready to take the test. This class is not intended to prepare an inexperienced dog for certification or guarantee that any canine team who completes the class will pass a “mission ready” test.
Certificates of Attendance will be issued to every student who completes the class. It is also recommended that each student have the Cadaver Dog Handbook for class. For more information please contact me at 401-226-1631 or mzarrella@ampkt.com.
